8 Ways to Refresh Your Home in the New Year

I don’t know about you, but I love using the new year as an opportunity to try new things and change up my routine. New year, new me! I especially love making changes in my home, but I don’t completely start from scratch. Here are eight ways to refresh your home when you’re ready to try something new.

1.  Restyle Shelves

Shelves are a constant in your space. Chances are that you see them nearly every day but rarely change them up. Now is your chance! Whether you decide to take down all of your décor and start with new décor or exchange favorites out for fresh pieces from shopping your own home, a change of scenery always helps make a space feel new.

Pro tip: Shop your own home! It’s easy to forget what decor you already own. Often, you can reuse or switch something from another room.

2.  Change out Pillows, Blankets, Rugs

A refresh of staple décor items like linens and pillows may seem small, but it makes a huge impact on the way a space feels. Play with different textures and colors for a whole new vibe!

3.  Bring in New Scents

Get a literal breath of fresh air in your home. It’s a simple fix that makes a world of a difference. We recommend tying in the scents of the season. Whether you prefer spring florals from your favorite florist or seasonal wall plug-in scents like Wallflowers or the Pura brand, fresh scents help welcome the new season.

4.  Repaint a Favorite Space—Go Bold!

Paint is one of my all-time favorite ways to refresh a space! It has the biggest bang for your buck and can completely change the feel of a space. Paint a feature wall or go bold and transform a room with a deep moody color (consider some of the 2023 colors of the year!).

5.  Bring in New Greenery

Greenery adds life, texture, and dimension to a space! Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or are a budding gardener, there’s no time like the present to start growing. Have some curious toddlers or fur babies around, or just aren’t interested in live plants? That’s great too! There are a lot of great faux plants in the market that bring a pop of color to your space.

6.  Get New Light(-ing!)

Great lighting makes such a difference in how a space feels. It sets the mood for ambiance, tasks, and warms up your home. Picking out the right piece can really impact your space. Adding a bit of warmth or light can help make the cold, dark winter days we're facing right now easier. I just did this in one of my projects and it made all the difference!

7.  Restyle Coffee Tables or Favorite Decor “areas”

Similar to refreshing shelves, restyling your coffee table or entryway table (if you have one!) are great ways to play with décor. Whether you’ve wanted to try new trends or want to showcase your favorite pieces, this is a great way to change up your décor mix! Stacked books, jarred candles, faux or real greenery, vases, décor objects…the list goes on… pick your favorites and run with it!

8.  Re-Purpose Artwork or Swap Artwork Around

Right now, we’re seeing a lot of repurposing old artwork by repainting the canvas and starting over! We love this budget- and environmentally-friendly way to turn old artwork into something else completely. Some DIYers are even using joint compound (meant for drywall projects!) as a texture medium, a totally new and easy way to elevate your wall art. Don’t be afraid to get creative and experiment until you create something you love.

If you have several pieces of artwork that you still love, consider swapping out a piece from your bedroom to your living room space or another area of your choice. It's a great way to repurpose artwork AND refresh the entire feel of a space!
